What’s the story?
Well, it is not so much a rumour, but almost a fact given the strength of the source.
The Athletic believe Luis Enrique is the leading contender to replace Conte at Spurs, with the Spaniard available to be hired whenever after leaving his role in charge of the Spanish national team back in December.
In our view, Reguilon will be very happy to hear that.
Why? Well, the left-back looks to have no future at Tottenham, with Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo claiming that Spurs have no plans to keep him next season, nor does Diego Simeone.
However, Reguilon – who is currently on loan at Atlético Madrid – could enjoy a new lease of life under Enrique.
As the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic struggle to make the left-back position their own at Tottenham, Enrique could decide to hand Reguilon a clean slate should he end up replacing Conte.
Reguilon may not be the only one to enjoy Tottenham resurgence
If Enrique does take the reins in north London, Bryan Gil may also experience a new lease of life.
The Spain international was given his La Roja debut by Enrique, with the Gijón-born tactician showering Tottenham’s £21.6m man in praise ahead of his first outing for the national team in March 2021.
Enrique told The Times: “He’s very mature and calm but with that youthful energy that takes you by surprise. As a footballer I don’t want to change him. He has confidence, he beats people.
“He plays with both feet, he has vision, he doesn’t lose the ball. He can improve in front of goal but he can also cross and shoot, and defensively he’s intense in the press.”
Reguilon and Gil cost Tottenham a combined £48.6m, so Daniel Levy would surely want Enrique to focus on the pair rather than leave them out in the wilderness like they already are.
