At the Hastings Chamber of Commerce annual meeting, Hastings Catholic Social Services (Hastings CSS) was named the Business of the Year in the Non-Profit category.
The award honors a nonprofit organization that has shown exemplary achievement in Hastings and the surrounding area in the recent years. CSS was among just over a half-dozen businesses and individual award winners at the meeting attended by more than 300 community members.
“I want to emphasize that the credit for any awards does not solely belong to me,” said John McDonald, Hastings CSS regional director, accepting the award. “It belongs to the generous donors supporting our programs, the dedicated marketing and development team promoting Hastings CSS, and the nearly 100 volunteers who are the backbone of our operations each month.”
The Hastings Chamber of Commerce began accepting nominations for the Non-Profit Business of the Year Award last fall. McDonald said just to be nominated was an honor, but to be selected as the winner of this award is truly a blessing.
“Through the past 30 years, the Hastings office has evolved and adapted to the needs of the community and has taken its current form as a stronghold in the battle against food insecurity, poverty, and homelessness,” said McDonald. “The success of CSS today is a result of the contributions of past staff and volunteers over those three decades.”
The award was based on the most recent statistics from Hastings CSS. The organization delivered 175 tons of food to clients in Hastings and to 14 food pantries in central Nebraska and provided $115,000 in monetary assistance. In addition, 180 households received rent and utility assistance; 60 tons of clothing were recycled; 62 households received furniture donated to Hastings CSS to help those in need.
More than 10,000 volunteer hours were logged at Hastings CSS. Volunteers come from all walks of life, and belong to various churches, organizations, or are individuals. Volunteers and staff at Hastings CSS handed out 237 food boxes and 181 holiday boxes.
