Golf betting tips: Farmers Insurance Open and Dubai Desert Classic

Date:

There are events on both sides of the Pond once again this week, with the Farmers Insurance Open the headline on the PGA Tour while the DP World Tour stages the Dubai Desert Classic.

It is an early start on the PGA Tour this week with the Farmers Insurance Open teeing off on Wednesday, and all eyes will be on Jon Rahm at Torrey Pines, the scene of his 2021 US Open success.

Meanwhile, the attention at one of the DP World Tour’s top events will focus on Rory McIlroy, who is just 16/5 to win the Dubai Desert Classic for a third time.

Finau can be there at the finish

Top tee-to-green players tend to perform well at Torrey Pines and while Rahm’s record at this tournament – five top-10s in his six appearances – is top-drawer, his price is somewhat prohibitive.

Preference is for Tony Finau who has shaken off his bridesmaid tag over the last 12 months and was second at the Farmers two years ago.

Victories at the 3M Open, the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the Houston Open in the closing stages of 2022 mean he has some decent form behind him and 16th at the American Express Championship last week was no disgrace.

Tip: Outright winner – Tony Finau @ 14/1 with bet365

Homa territory can inspire Max

This will be Max Homa’s first appearance since he was third behind Rahm at the Tournament of Champions a few weeks ago and he should build on that in his home state of California.

He has tasted victory five times on the PGA Tour and three of those successes have come in the Golden State, so he has a good chance of improving on the ninth place he posted at Torrey Pines in 2020.

His last win was at the Fortinet Championship in September and he looks capable of making a bold bid.

Tip: Outright winner – Max Homa @ 20/1 with bet365

Rose could bloom again

It will be 10 years in June since Justin Rose won the US Open but there seems to be some life left and he could still make an impression this week.

It has been a while since he was at the top of his game but Torrey Pines is a venue at which he has performed well before, with form figures of 4-8-1-MC-6 in his last five Farmers appearances, although he did not play in this tournament in 2021.

His 26th at the AmEx last week, when he closed with a 65, was encouraging and he can make his presence felt again.

Tip: Outright winner – Justin Rose @ 50/1 with bet365

Hojgaard in excellent nick

There seems little value in backing some of the established star names in Dubai this week and it could be wiser to look a little further down the list.

One player who jumps out is Nicolai Hojgaard, who starred for Continental Europe at the Hero Cup and was 10th last week at the Abu Dhabi Championship when a cold putter let him down.

He missed the cut here last year but he was fourth at the DP World Tour Championship in 2021 and won the Ras Al Khaimah Championship last year, so he is a proven desert performer.

Another strong tee-to-green performance could put him right in the mix.

Tip: Outright winner – Nicolai Hojgaard @ 55/1 with bet365

Rozner can bounce back

Antonie Rozner is a consistent DP World Tour performer and he also has a desert pedigree, having won the Golf in Dubai Championship in 2020 and the Qatar Masters.

He slipped to 50th in Abu Dhabi last week after a poor final round but there was enough on the opening three days to suggest his game is heading in the right direction and it would not be a huge shock if he bounced back.

Tip: Outright winner – Antoine Rozner @ 50/1 with bet365

Scrivener in fine fettle

Jason Scrivener is a hefty price to win this week but he cannot fail to have been encouraged by finishes of 18-2-18-7 in his last four tournaments.

That should give him plenty of confidence, as will finishes of sixth and seventh at this venue in 2018 and 2019.

Tip: Outright winner – Jason Scrivener @ 80/1 with bet365
