Postmedia reported last month that Greig was on Canada’s radar screen for this tournament because of his experience on the world stage and the strides he made with the Senators this season.

This isn’t the first time Greig has suited up for his country. He played a key role to help Canada win gold at the 2022 IIHF world junior championship by contributing three goals and seven points in seven games.

Canadian general manager Rick Nash left room on the roster to make further additions as teams get eliminated from the NHL playoffs.

“We are excited to unveil the first 22 players who will wear the Maple Leaf. This is a group that includes several players who have been successful on the international stage, and we know fans will be thrilled to watch us compete” Nash said. “We know our players will represent Canada with pride, and we are confident this group will give us a great chance to defend our gold medal this month.”

Greig will be among as many as five Ottawa players that will participate in the tourney.

Captain Brady Tkachuk, defenceman Jake Sanderson and centre Shane Pinto were all named to the U.S. roster last week while unrestricted free agent winger Dominik Kubalik will play for Czechia.

Canada will open the tourney next Saturday against Great Britain.
